Reflective and Reflexive Practice for Mediators

Reflective Practice - reflecting on how you practice mediation, what model you use, which interventions you choose and how they work or don't work with different clients. Often used in conjunction with supervision or peer supervision.

Reflexive Practice - in my view a characteristic of an advanced mediator, a mediator who believes that their personal development is equally important if not more important than their professional development when it comes to best mediation practice. A mediator who has taken the necessary steps (and continues to because the work is usually ongoing for all of us) to deal with their own internal conflicts and make peace with themselves. This includes looking at their own family of origin, spousal or parenting issues if they are a family dispute resolution practitioner as well seeking a deeper self awareness in relation to their life values, beliefs and prejudices.
